NYC Mesothelioma Law Firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP, Celebrates NYU Cancer Institute’s New Research System
New York, NY, August 24, 2012 — The NYU Langone Medical Center’s Cancer Institute recently purchased a highly advanced molecular analysis system for cancer research with funds donated by the New York mesothelioma lawyers of Belluck & Fox, LLP.
The NanoString Technologies nCounter Analysis System is a fully automated, multi-application digital detection and counting system that provides assays for gene expression, miRNA analysis and copy number variation. It has been employed in basic and translational research of cancer, metabolic disease, infectious disease and more since it was first introduced in 2008.
New York mesothelioma attorney Joseph W. Belluck, a founding partner of Belluck & Fox, said the firm was inspired to make a donation to the Langone Cancer Institute by the work of the Institute’s Dr. Harvey Pass.
“We’re excited that, with this purchase, Dr. Pass and his colleagues can obtain faster results as they seek the clues to better treatments and, one day, a cure for mesothelioma,” Belluck said.
“Dr. Pass has treated many of our clients and is one of our heroes. We know he is fighting for a cure and for our clients.”
Pass is a thoracic surgeon whose research includes discovery of a protein present at early stages of mesothelioma, which has led to earlier detection and treatment of the disease. Pass’ work also has brought increased awareness in the medical community and the general public of the dangers of asbestos exposure and its relationship to pleural mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer of the lining of the lungs, chest or abdomen that is caused by exposure to asbestos, which most often occurs at an industrial or manufacturing workplace many years prior to the victim’s diagnosis. The disease is highly aggressive and is resistant to many cancer treatments.
“At Belluck & Fox, we share Dr. Pass’ goal of creating greater awareness of mesothelioma and helping victims of this deadly disease,” Belluck said.
Scientists and other researchers at the Institute work to understand how cancer develops at the molecular level, and how to use knowledge about how cancer develops to reduce the risk of cancer and treat the disease. The Institute also offers a full continuum of personalized cancer care, from prevention through diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment support.
Belluck & Fox, LLP, is a nationally recognized New York personal injury law firm that represents individuals with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related claims. The firm has won several multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for mesothelioma sufferers and their families through personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits.
The firm sponsors MesotheliomaHelp.net, one of the Web’s primary resources for information on malignant mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The law firm and MesotheliomaHelp.net recently announced an essay contest for college students that will award $10,000 in tuition money for the top essays about mesothelioma.
“Our primary focus as mesothelioma attorneys is working to protect the rights of individuals who must fight this terrible disease because they were wrongly exposed to asbestos,” Belluck said.
“We also want to give back and be a part of the community that is fighting mesothelioma and raising awareness about this cancer and other asbestos-related diseases.”
