Mesothelioma Diagnosis: Integrated PET-CT

Integrated PET-CT is a newer technology that combines PET and CT scanning in one machine. This technology allows the physician to see both the functional mapping provided by PET and the anatomic detail provided by CT at the same time, with the images precisely aligned to highlight the relationship between the two scans. The combined technology has shown great potential for a variety of diagnostic and treatment-related issues, with one of the most important being its ability to precisely align the metabolic activity seen on a PET scan to the finely-detailed anatomical information seen on a CT scan.

A number of researchers are investigating PET-CT’s efficacy for mesothelioma treatment and staging and, while the results are promising, they are not yet conclusive enough to recommend a change in the use of current technologies.
